Short List Of Design Tips
A short list of design tips for
better deliverability and lower postage costs.
1. Determine what class of
mail (i.e. first, standard A) you want to use and then be sure
to print the proper indicia on the
envelope or mailing piece.
2. Make the fold at the bottom of self mailers. The
opening should be at the top so that only one
tab
is required for automated mail.
3. Leave room for the tab -
usually in the top middle of the piece. If the opening is on the
bottom, two tabs are required spaced a half inch from each side
4. Make sure your return address and any other post
address is not within the OCR scanning
area. Otherwise your mail may be returned to you
instead of the mailing address intended.
5. Leave enough room for the address label. Check with
your mail house to see what size labels they routinely use.
6. Make sure you do not have copy in the
barcode
clear zone. If you do the post office may cover it up with
white tape.
7. If you want to save on
Standard A (third class) postage, make sure your design falls
into the "Letter"
category. A half inch too long or tall will classify
your mailing as a flat.
8. Stay away from a square
design. You may incur a surcharge for mail being out
of ratio for postal equipment.
9. Pay attention to the type of
paper you will be using for your flyer or mailer. A glossy
stock will not hold meter ink. Be sure to use an indicia
on glossy stock.
10. Your mailing company is your
best friend for saving your money. The earlier you consult
with them in the design process, the more impact they can have
in helping your mail speed through the postal system, and in
saving you postage.
